Postcard from Concorso D'Eleganza Villa D'Este

Built in 1568 by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, the Grand Hotel Villa D’Este nestles against the North Western shores of Lake Como, in the affluent town of Cernobbio, and first hosted a Concorso D’Eleganza, on September 1st 1929.

Since 1999, BMW Group has been the primary organiser of this invitation only concours, bringing together approximately ninety of the globe’s most significant collectors/concept cars and for the last five years, an equally stunning motorcycle display.

Viewing is open to invited guests only on the Saturday, before the cars are relocated within the town, to the nearby Spazia Villa Erba (where the public select Sunday’s overall winners).

- Most successful car of the weekend - a multiple award winner in the public’s eyes at Villa Erba, and a class winner at Villa D’Este, was Corrado Lopresto’s 1931 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS Zagato Aprile Spider. This unique machine started life as a fourth series Zagato Spider, but in the late thirties its body was significantly damaged and in 1938, was purchased by Giuseppe Aprile – an Italian coachbuilder, who fitted a distinctive, two-seater, cycle-wing body, designed by Count Revelli de Beaumont.

- Fittingly in Maserati’s centenary year, overall victor of the Trofeo BMW Group, was Albert Spiess’s 1956 Maserati 450S or Tipo 54 – one of approximately ten  examples built in Modena, with bodywork by Fantuzzi, mated to a sonorous 4.4 litre, 400bhp  short-stroke V8 and a five-speed, ZF gearbox. This highly successful sports-racer competed either side of the Atlantic and in South America, in multiple engine configurations…. amassing thirty-one victories, from one hundred and nineteen starts – the most prominent, the 1957 Sebring 12 Hours.

- With a working partnership first formed in 1904, Charles Rolls and Sir Henry Royce launched their first road car, the “10hp” model at that December’s Paris Salon. One hundred and ten years later, and nowadays a BMW AG “brand”, Rolls Royce celebrated this landmark, with the debut of three bespoke models on the Concorso lawn, whilst Mark de Ferranti (1908 Silver Ghost) and Lord Anthony Bamford (1934 Phantom II) collected three “class awards” between them.
