SIR JACK BRABHAM 1926-2014

Sir Jack was born in Hurstville New South Wales, initially serving in the Royal Australian Air Force as a mechanic, before beginning racing domestically in sprint, midget cars in 1948. His success throughout New Zealand and Australia, lead him to relocate to the UK in 1954, making his Grand Prix debut the following year.

His first Grand Prix win came in the 1959 Monaco Grand Prix, at the wheel of a Cooper, which by season end….. he had converted into his first Formula One World Championship. With a second title in 1960, and third in 1966, he is one of only nine drivers in the history of F1, to have won the World Drivers Championship on three, or more occasions.

In 1962, he established his own Brabham marque with fellow Australian, Ron Tauranac, which during the 1960's became the globe's largest manufacturer of customer racing cars. He marked his third F1 title, by uniquely winning the Championship, in a car bearing his own name, the Brabham BT19.

Brabham raced on into his forties, recording his fourteenth and last F1 victory at the age of 43, in the 1970 South African Grand Prix….. before retiring to his native Australia. An active member of Club International des Anciens Pilotes de Grand Prix, he was also a regular attendee and guest-speaker, at historic events worldwide.

Knighted in 1979 for his services to, and successes in global motorsport, this was complemented by being awarded the Order of Australia in 2008.
