We are proud to offer this Ducati 998S Bostrom Replica for sale. Built to commemorate Ben’s exploits in World Superbike racing, these bikes were produced in low numbers: 310 for the USA and Europe, the UK split down the middle. This UK example is number 21 of 155, 155 being Ben’s number that adorned his race bikes, and this 998S’s bodywork. Signed by the man himself on the gorgeous fuel tank and labelled with the commemorative plaque on the top triple clamp, this 998S is absolutely, 100% guaranteed to stand out of the crowd with its eye-catching, complimentary livery inspired by Ben’s helmet design.
The Ducati 998 was the successor to the Ducati 996 and the final variation on the Tamburini designed, unequivocally stunning Ducati 916. It was produced in various models from 2002 to 2004 and incorporated the new Testastretta (narrow head) engine. This engine shared many similarities with the previous Desmoquattro engine in the 996 but was completely new from the crankshaft up. It proved to be so good, it was used up until the 999S.
The complete redesign of the cylinder heads was courtesy of the retired Ferrari design engineer Angiolino Marchetti who used his experience from working on the never raced, late 80s V-12 Formula 1 Desmodromic engine. He specified a free breathing 25-degree valve angle (compared to 40mm previously) to service cylinders whose bores were 2mm larger (100mm x 63.5mm). The new, bigger pistons were lighter than their predecessors, and allowed for flatter combustion chambers, and the use of larger 40mm inlet valves (over 36mm) and 33mm exhaust valves (over 30mm).
Ducati introduced this new 998cc engine design in on the 996R in 2001 and won the world superbike championship with it with Troy Bayliss. The engine was further tuned for 136BHP on the 998S model however which was also blessed with Ohlins forks and steering damper, along with a 5-part fairing with a belly-pan. Historically paired with Ducati, the ‘Termignoni’ logo is proudly displayed on the exhaust system of this bike, finished in carbon fibre, like the Ducati Corse ‘hugger, exhaust guard and clutch cover. The bike makes a sound that quite honestly must be heard to be believed.
Moto Classica Limited are pleased to offer for sale this immaculate piece of Ducati racing history which will be supplied with a manufacturer service and fresh MOT.
