Ferrari S.p.A.'s fortieth anniversary, Enzo Ferrari's imminent ninetieth birthday, and a request for a bold replacement for the 288GTO, were instrumental in Pininfarina (via their eminent designer Leonardo Fioravanti) penning and delivering the visceral F40, in 1987. With an intended production run of just 300 units - overwhelming global demand mean't approx.. 1,315 examples were delivered between 1987 and 1992.
The 288GTO's legacy was the 2.9 litre, V8 powered, 32 valve, fuel-injected engine, complete with intercooled twin IHI (Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries) supplied turbochargers, delivering 478bhp, mated to a five speed manual gearbox, and rack and pinion steering. The claimed 0-60mph time of just 4.5 seconds from this high-winged, left-hand-drive only, carbon-fibre monocoqued supercar, remains stunningly quick, twenty-seven years on…..
The car we offer, chassis no # ZFFGJ34B00088960, with matching engine no # 26209, was produced on assembly no #5957, in March 1991 and delivered in rosso corsa (FER309) with red cloth, and nero #152 (black) carpeting. It has the following -
